Italy is described as a living canvas: A land where the art of living is still very much alive. Culturally as well as agriculturally wealthy, she never fails to amaze visitors from near and far with her incomparable beauty.

Welcome to the very heart of Italy, Le Marche. The richness of her artistic, cultural, and archaeological legacies, the legends and myths, and the evocativeness of the landscape in all its colours and moods, truly uplift the spirit!

Originally inhabited by the Gauls, Sabines and the Piceni, this fascinating corner of Italy was later incorporated into the domain of Rome and subsequently developed into a strategically important trade centre, taking advantage of the principal routes: the Via Salaria and Via Flaminia. Later ruled by Lombards in the south and Byzantines in the north (evidence of this influence still exists today in the form of the many castles, fortresses and hilltop towns that are scattered around the countryside), towns and villages eventually gained their independence from the Feudal Lords with the territory being divided up into small states.

During the Middle Ages the territory consisted mainly of two powerful fiefdoms: The Montefeltro of Urbino and the Malatesta of Pesaro. But it was not until the 16th century when the church widened its influence that the region was ruled by the Papal State and divided into imperial border provinces called Marche, meaning border provinces of the Holy Roman Empire. After the battle of Castelfidardo in 1860, the Marche became part of newly united Italy.

Set against the backdrop of picturesque mountains and hills, verdant countryside and the Adriatic coast, Le Marche offers many of the good things that seem to be sadly overlooked in most guidebooks. However, you will find that our region is unspoilt, never less than beautiful and just as inspiring and welcoming as some of our neighbouring regions in Italy
